 Ever wonder what happens behind the scenes when you type a question into Large Language Model Systems like ChatGPT or Google Bard and you get an instant answer? It almost feels like magic, right? 

Imagine you’re cruising through your favorite burger joint, hungry for some yummy burger. You pull up to the drive-thru window, and you speak into the intercom “I’d like a cheeseburger with fries, please, Thanks!” and by the time you reach the pickup window, your meal is ready to go. 

That’s similar to how Large Language Model systems work. You give them a prompt or a text (your order), and you get an instant response (your meal).  What is Artificial Intelligence? If you’re curious about AI and have an appetite for knowledge, you’re in for a tasty treat. I’m Kola, your Chef for today, and I’ve got something special cooking for you. Today, I’m going to explain AI through the lens of a delicious West African cuisine – Jollof Rice! 

Jollof rice is made from two main components 1. Raw rice –  “In the world of AI, data is our raw rice. 2. Ingredients. We add Ingredients such as tomatoes, onions, salt and seasonings. Let’s call these ingredients our AI algorithms. And when we combine the Data (which is our raw rice) and the algorithm (which are our ingredients), what we get in return is an AI model or output, our delicious yummy jollof rice. A simplified equation for a model is y = f(x) where x is our input (our data or raw rice), f is the function, our algorithm (ingredients), and y represents our AI model or output (Jollof rice). 

So, much like the satisfaction you get from eating our yummy Jollof rice, practical applications of our AI models are called AI systems. These AI systems can predict stock prices, forecast the weather, and offer tailored product recommendations based on your preferences.

It was the early 1920s in the bustling city of Madrid; the world was on the cusp of transformation, and the telephone industry was booming, revolutionizing the way people communicated. Amidst this seismic shift, a group of young and spirited women worked as “cable girls” at the National Telephone Company, connecting callers through switchboard operators with skill and grace. As cable girls, their roles were vital, facilitating conversations between loved ones and handling business calls with precision. Their job was secure, and they felt a sense of pride in their work.

However, the winds of change began to blow as technological innovations gripped the telephone industry. The introduction of automatic dialing systems threatened to make their manual switchboard operation obsolete. The management saw it as a cost-effective measure and a sign of progress. Little did the cable girls know that their world was about to be turned upside down.

Throughout history, humanity has witnessed numerous technological breakthroughs such as the one in the telephone industry that have transformed the way we work and live. These innovations have consistently disrupted the job landscape, leaving workers with two choices: adapt or be left behind.

Artificial Intelligence, the new talk of the town, the new electricity, and the latest game-changer, is undoubtedly impacting various industries. Everyone is asking – What will happen to our jobs? Will AI be a force for good, or will it become the biggest existential threat to the human race? We are not alone in these inquiries. Every generation has feared and felt the advent of new technological revolutions and their impacts, from the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century to the rise of personal computers and the Internet in the 20th century. During these periods, there were significant advancements in various industries, leading to a dramatic shift in the way people worked and lived.

Today, AI-powered systems can perform tasks previously reserved for human workers, leading to concerns about job displacement. Repetitive and rule-based tasks in data entry, customer service, and even certain aspects of creative fields face potential disruption. However, it is essential to remember the lessons from history, draw parallels, and prepare ourselves for the future. Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it. Just as past innovations created new job opportunities and transformed the way we work, AI also opens up possibilities in emerging fields. Jobs in AI programming, data science, machine learning, project management, and AI ethics are on the rise, presenting exciting prospects for those willing to embrace the change.

Practical Steps

To navigate the AI era and prepare for potential job shifts, consider these practical steps:

  1. Transformation, not Substitution: AI will indeed transform jobs, but it is unlikely to outright replace them. There is no denying that certain job roles will undergo significant changes. However, history has shown that technological innovations, including AI, are more likely to augment human capabilities rather than eliminate jobs. AI is best suited for specific tasks rather than holistic decision-making. AI excels at processing vast amounts of data quickly and identifying patterns, but it lacks the emotional intelligence, creativity, and critical thinking that humans possess. For jobs that require complex problem-solving, empathy, and adaptability, human workers will remain indispensable. Moreover, the integration of AI in various industries will create new job opportunities that we might not even envision yet.
  2. Tasks not Jobs: It is essential to understand that AI will not replace entire jobs but rather specific tasks within those jobs. Take inventory of your job and understand how AI will impact specific tasks. McKinsey’s research estimated that, with generative AI, automation could take over tasks accounting for 29.5 percent of the hours worked in the U.S. economy by 2030. As AI takes over routine and repetitive tasks, human workers will be able to focus on more strategic and value-added aspects of their jobs. For example, in the healthcare sector, AI can assist with diagnostics and data analysis, allowing medical professionals to spend more time on patient care and treatment plans.
  3. Stay, Don’t Run: AI will meet you where you are. I encourage you to stay on your current career path while embracing the possibilities that technology offers. Making a drastic career shift might not always be necessary when AI can augment and enhance your existing skills and passion. For instance, take my own experience as a cloth designer. I have a deep love for creating unique cloth designs, and I am intrigued by the potential of AI in this field. Instead of completely changing my passion, I am excited about exploring how AI can be utilized to generate a wider range of designs, optimize color combinations, and improve production processes. By integrating AI into my design process, I can amplify my creativity and productivity, ultimately taking my cloth designs to new heights. By embracing a mindset of continuous learning and upskilling, you can ensure that AI meets you where you are.
